According to a research paper from Old Sturbridge, William Kendall, Jr. in 1824 “put into successful operation, an improved Circular Saw' adapted to mill logs of the largest size.” The saw was six feet in diameter and constructed of iron boiler places with inserted steel teeth. Kendall's saw reportedly could cut four times as many board feet per hour as a reciprocating saw. “On January 11, 1827, Kendall's circular saw for which he was awarded a government patent in 1826 broke all its own previous records by cutting 175,000 feet of boards over twenty-four hours of consecutive operations.”
